Our school's Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) program began enrolling students in 2003. After nineteen years of development, it has become a top undergraduate program in Shandong Province and a high-level applied program in the same province. The TCM program aims to meet the needs of regional economic development, focusing on cultivating advanced professionals in Chinese pharmacology with a solid foundation in theory and systematic professional qualities. The pharmaceutical comprehensive laboratory responsible for experimental teaching in this program is a provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. Among the teachers responsible for teaching courses in the TCM program, there are 13 with senior titles, 17 with associate titles, 21 master's supervisors, and 58 individuals with master's or doctoral degrees. The team consists mainly of middle-aged and young teachers, with a reasonable structure for sustainable development. Currently, the TCM program has one provincial program group (5 core courses), two provincial quality courses, four school-level quality courses, one provincial key discipline, one provincial teaching team, and one school-level teaching team. The pharmaceutical program closely related to the TCM program has become a national-level characteristic program, with the authorization to grant master's degrees in pharmacy. These aspects have provided a solid foundation for the development of the TCM program.
The School of Pharmacy at Shandong First Medical University was established based on the support of the School of Pharmacy. The discipline of pharmacy was initiated at the original Taishan Medical College in 1974. In February 2019, Shandong First Medical University was officially established, providing policy support to accelerate the integration of science and education and the development of disciplines. The pharmacy discipline began enrolling Master's students in Medicinal Chemistry in 1982. In 2011, it was approved as a first-level discipline Master's degree authorization point. In 2012, Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Engineering directions were added, and in 2018, it was granted the authorization to award Master's degrees in Pharmacy. In the past five years, 127 Master's students have graduated, with 2 outstanding Master's theses from Shandong Province and 3 outstanding scientific and technological innovation achievements from Shandong Province.
The pharmacy discipline focuses on Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Medicinal Chemistry, Microbiology and Biochemical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmaceutical Engineering. The discipline comprises 96 members, including 72 Master's supervisors, 55 senior title holders, and 53 PhD holders. Pharmacology and Toxicology, as well as Chemistry, rank in the top 1% globally according to ESI. Pharmacology is a key characteristic discipline in Shandong Province, while Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Medicinal Chemistry are key disciplines in medicine and health in Shandong Province. Furthermore, several renowned domestic pharmaceutical companies such as Qilu Pharmaceutical, Lunan Pharmaceutical, Bainuo Pharmaceutical, and Dagan Pharmaceutical have become practice teaching and research bases for the School of Pharmacy at Shandong First Medical University.
The pharmacy discipline emphasizes research innovation and achievement transformation. In the past five years, it has undertaken 57 projects at the provincial and ministerial levels, receiving funding of over 121.8 million RMB, including 20 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, 41 projects from provincial natural science funds, and key research and development plans. They have published 355 SCI papers, received 5 provincial-level teaching achievement awards, and 12 department-level scientific research awards. They have been granted 64 national invention patents, signed 13 horizontal contracts with seven domestic pharmaceutical companies, totaling over 2.4 million RMB.
After nearly half a century of development, the pharmacy discipline has made significant contributions to talent cultivation, scientific research, and achievement transformation. It has formed a distinctive feature of integrated innovation in science and education. In order to adapt to Shandong Province's "Eight Major Development Strategies" and the needs of key industries, it has provided favorable support to help the pharmaceutical industry meet the health needs of the people.
